Solanum lycopersicum

A Taste of History, Perfect for Canberra Gardens!

The Black Krim tomato is a true connoisseur's delight, hailing from the Isle of Krim in the Black Sea. This heirloom variety is renowned for its unique, slightly salty, smoky flavour and striking appearance. Fruits are medium to large, often with shoulders that remain somewhat green even when ripe, maturing to a deep mahogany-red, almost purplish-black hue.

Why Grow Black Krim?

  • Exceptional Flavour: Its complex, rich taste makes it a standout for fresh eating in salads, sandwiches, or simply sliced with a sprinkle of salt.
  • Heirloom Charm: Connect with gardening history by growing this well-loved, open-pollinated variety. You can save your own seeds!
  • Productive: An indeterminate variety, Black Krim will continue to produce fruit throughout the growing season until the first frost, given proper support (staking or caging is recommended).
  • Canberra Adapted: While it loves warmth, with a good start after frosts, Black Krim performs well in Canberra's sunny summers.

Growing Tips:

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date in Canberra. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are sturdy and all danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot. Amend soil with compost for best results. Provide regular watering, especially during dry spells, and feed occasionally with a balanced tomato fertiliser.

Growing Information:

  • Sowing Depth: 5mm (1/4 inch)
  • Plant Spacing: 60-90cm (24-36 inches) apart
  • Best Sowing Time (Canberra): Spring, after last frost (mid-October to November)
  • Light Needs: Full sun (at least 6-8 hours)
  • Water Needs: Consistent, deep watering, especially during fruit set
  • Harvest/Bloom: 70-90 days from transplant
